he highly anticipated Art Cologne Palma art fair takes place from April 9 - 12 at the Palau de Congresso de Palma. This partnership reaffirms the growing contemporary art scene on the island while also giving Art Cologne, one of the oldest running European art fairs, a renewed boost of energy. The fair brings together 88 galleries and non-profit institutions from 20 countries, with 32 Spanish galleries, including 15 galleries from Mallorca in the mix. The fair is presented in partnership with Art Palmi Contemporani, the island’s gallery association.

This is not the first collaboration between Art Cologne and Palma. There was a first edition in 2007, but due to a variety of reasons, including the global financial crisis of 2008, it never saw a second edition. According to Daniel Hug, who has been leading Art Cologne as director since 2008, conversations began a couple of years ago, when Art Palma Contemporani approached him to discuss another fair. “For me, the big difference [between 2008 and now] was the gallery association. That was a game changer in terms of infrastructure and organization,” Hug explains. “Another thing was the level of galleries, which is now on par with other big cities – from more established spaces, such as Pelaires and Kewenig, and younger-mid-level galleries like Florit Florit and Fermay. In addition, the Palacio de Congresso with its quirky architecture which lends itself to a unique experience and environment.”

rt Cologne Palma will feature two distinct sections: Gran Saló, for the more established galleries, with a classic art fair layout and curatorial approach, and Parkour, which proposes a more experimental approach, inviting galleries to work beyond the traditional booth format and engage with the Brutalist-style architecture of the Palau de Congressos, designed by Francisco Magado in 2000. “Parkour redefines what an art fair can be or doesn’t have to be,” says Hug. “It is going to be more like the Independent - more loose and experimental.”

Cultural institutions across the island will also participate with off-site events including the Es Baluard Museum, which presents a major exhibition of work by Jannis Kounellis, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca, Casal Solleric and CCA Andratx.

After the initial talks with APC about a possible partnership, Hug came back to the island for a visit - the first in years, saying,  “I was blown away by how much it had changed. Palma is more than a destination, it’s a city with galleries, an art school, great  exhibitions, collectors”. Hug compares Palma loosely to an early Miami - pre Art Basel - but better. Hug notes the importance of creating more localised fairs that connect to the host city and bring out the best of its artistic scene. The response from invited galleries to apply was strong, with many curious to see how the first year goes. Hug is confident about the partnership, saying, “I’m 100 % convinced that this thing is going to work and people will wonder why it didn’t happen sooner.”

Participating Mallorca galleries include: Baró, Kewenig, Pelaires, Xavier Fiol, Florit/Florit, La Bibi + Reus, Galeria Fermay, Kaplan, 6A Taller, A66 Santanyi, ABA Art, Gerhardt Braun, Kant, Lundgren and Pep Llabres.
