hile the summer season might be coming to an end, life on the island is only heating up. Autumn is one of the best times of the year in Mallorca for culture, food and outdoor life. After a long, hot summer, often full of travel or hosting visitors, the fall brings a rush of new activities, new schedules, and everything seems just a bit easier without the scorching heat overhead. It's time to dig out your jeans and maybe a light sweater and get ready for the new season. Here are five things that we are looking forward to this fall.

1. With slightly cooler temperatures, hiking season kicks in – with October and November perfect for exploring new paths. Whether along the GR-221 in the Tramuntanas or discovering the trails along the eastern edge of the island, hiking is at its best and we cannot wait to get our boots back on. Best of all? Water temperatures become nice and cool again, so we suggest taking a path that leads to a refreshing swim.

2. Terraces in Palma feel less crowded and more inviting after the summer swarms have faded. With so many excellent coffee shops around the city, with one opening up nearly every other week it seems, there is no better time to enjoy a good coffee with friends. Prefer a vermouth or aperitif instead? We feel you. Check out some of our favourite rooftop bars for a drink with a view.

3. Summer boasts stone fruits and endless tomatoes, but the fall brings plenty of delicious things to the market and onto the menu. Think mushrooms, olives, honey and, of course, wine, when local wine makers harvest their grapes and prepare their next vintage. Local fiestas take place nearly every weekend, celebrating the fall season and Mallorca’s diverse agriculture. Three highlights include the Fira del Vi (Wine Fair) in Binissalem, at the end of September, Dijous-Bo in Inca, and the Fira de la Mel (Honey Fair) in Llubi, later in November.

4. When it comes to culture, Nit del Art Palma, happening on September 20th, sets the tone for the art season, with new exhibitions opening at cultural centres, museums and galleries across Palma and other parts of the island as well. We will be keeping you posted on some of the exhibitions, events and artists to look out for in the coming months.

5. This fall, Palma is host to three film festivals - each very different. The 16th edition of the Palma Muntanya Film Festival, focused on films about the mountains, hiking, climbing, expeditions, adventure as well as nature and the environment. The Evolution Film Festival,  now in its 14th season, opens on October 21st. The festival has steadily grown over the years, featuring award-winning cinema, from short and feature films to a special Balearic film section and new talents, among others. It also hosts industry panels and workshops leading writers, directors and cinematographers. Also coming up at the end of November is the Festival de Cinema Documental de Mallorca, or Major Docs, a creative documentary film festival that highlights the power of the documentary medium.
