he Festival de Literatura Expandida a Magaluf (FLEM) will celebrate its fifth edition from October 2–5, 2025. Launched in 2019 as an initiative by Palma’s independent bookstore Rata Corner and INNSiDE by Meliá, the festival was conceived to bring literature beyond conventional spaces and to connect it with music, art, and performance. In just a few years, FLEM has grown into an exciting literary festival and an international meeting point for authors, artists, and cultural voices. FLEM chose Magaluf as the festival’s destination to show the potential for positioning this often notorious part of the island beyond a tourist destination into an engaging cultural stage.
This year’s lineup reflects that ambition, gathering over thirty writers alongside musicians, illustrators, and performers. Highlights include the participation of Siri Hustvedt, the Princess of Asturias Award-winning author; Rita Bullwinkel, a recent Pulitzer Prize finalist; and Helen Fielding, the creator of the beloved Bridget Jones series. Spanish and Latin American voices such as Joana Marcús, Javier Cercas, Pedro Mairal, and Dolores Reyes add further weight to the program. Yet FLEM’s scope extends well beyond literature: concerts, live podcasts, guided tours, art installations in the festival’s “Secret Rooms,” and even a European Writers’ Football Championship ensure that the four-day event continues its tradition of reimagining what a literary festival can be. With all activities open to the public free of charge, FLEM represents both a cultural innovation and a showcase of Mallorca’s evolving identity.
