“In Filum” is an exhibition of paintings and collages by Juan Giralt (Madrid 1940-2007) currently on view at Galeria Pelaires. Located in the Cabinet space, accessed through the gallery’s office on the first floor, the intimate exhibition presents nine pieces by the Spanish painter dating from the 1990s. While Giralt received early recognition as a painter and worked steadily throughout his life, his work remains lesser known outside of Madrid, making this a unique opportunity for many people to discover or rediscover his work.
Giralt exhibited once before in Mallorca, in 1973, also at Galeria Pelaires, in a group exhibition that was a tribute to Joan Miró. This was partly the motivation for curators Marcos Giralt Torrente, Giralt’s son, and Marta Rincón to bring the work to the gallery again 50 years later. “Our cabinet exhibition is, needless to say, just an introduction to Giralt’s body of work. For the sake of consistency, we have selected nine pieces from a very specific period: the early 1990s, the beginning of the apex of his artistic mastery, when he overcame the dichotomies between abstraction and figuration and between analysis and gesture that so much influenced earlier periods of his career”, they explain.
