“In Filum” is an exhibition of paintings and collages by Juan Giralt (Madrid 1940-2007) currently on view at Galeria Pelaires. Located in the Cabinet space, accessed through the gallery’s office on the first floor, the intimate exhibition presents nine pieces by the Spanish painter dating from the 1990s. While Giralt received early recognition as a painter and worked steadily throughout his life, his work remains lesser known outside of Madrid, making this a unique opportunity for many people to discover or rediscover his work.

Giralt exhibited once before in Mallorca, in 1973, also at Galeria Pelaires, in a group exhibition that was a tribute to Joan Miró. This was partly the motivation for curators Marcos Giralt Torrente, Giralt’s son, and Marta Rincón to bring the work to the gallery again 50 years later. “Our cabinet exhibition is, needless to say, just an introduction to Giralt’s body of work. For the sake of consistency, we have selected nine pieces from a  very specific period: the early 1990s, the beginning of the apex of his artistic mastery, when he overcame the dichotomies between abstraction and figuration and between analysis and gesture that so much influenced earlier periods of his career”, they explain.

Coming of age as an artist in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Giralt was known for his painterly and often colourful canvases that were inspired by American Abstract Expressionism as well as the COBRA movement happening in Europe. Moving between abstraction and figuration, he also began incorporating collage into his practice in the 1980s. This sense of experimentation and moving between gestures or on the fringes of artistic movements is conveyed in the paintings and collages on display at Pelaires.

As Marcos Giralt Torrente explains, “The title, “In Filum”, is a Latin word that in Spanish translates roughly as ‘on the edge’ or on the wire’, and results in the same idea present in the titles of other recent exhibitions of my father: “Painting between Extremes” (Galería Cayón, Madrid, 2020 /21) and “Control and Escape” (National Society of Fine Arts, Lisbon, 2021/22). The idea is that my father's painting is forged in a territory of intersection, of synthesis of apparently antagonistic impulses. On the one hand, that of abstraction versus figuration, and, on the other, that of spatial analysis versus the expressionist gesture. In his painting the four tendencies coexist and what characterises it is his ability to reconcile them.... he walks, then, on the edge, on the border”.

Juan Giralt, “In Filum”, is on view at Galeria Pelaires through May 24, 2024.
