Katrin Kirk and Anja Kleener
A

nja Kleener and Katrin Kirk are the founders of The Beehive, one of Mallorca’s most thoughtful and engaging platforms for showcasing artists and creatives on the island. Both Kleener and Kirk are Danish and have been living on the island for over 20-years. Both women are artists in their own right; Kleener is an established abstract painter and collage artists who has exhibited at Sa Tafona Gallery in La Residencia and Rialto Living, among others, while Kirk has shown at the Natalia Benito Gallery in Alaro and has done commissions for high-end hotels.

The two met years ago while living in Alaro, and over coffee one day, along with a 3rd partner, Monica, who has since left the island, they began talking about some of the artists on the island who were inspiring them, many from Alaro and “the idea formed from there,” the pair explain. “Katrin was living in an old shoe factory in Alaro, which was the perfect space to do the shows. It became the brain of the project,” Kleener says. The first pop up took place in May of 2018. At first they did it every weekend and then it was every month, each time with a new concept, new people, but with a focus on artists from Alaro. “We wanted to shine a light on all of the talented creatives and so at first we were called The Alaro Beehive,” says Kleener. That went on for about two-years until Covid shut them down. “But,” Kleener says, “we also needed a break at that point. It was getting intense and neither of us had time for our own projects. It had become an almost full-time job.”

fter Covid started to subside and the world re-opened,  Kirk and Kleener regrouped - this time just the two of them. In 2022 and 2023, they did a large event at Ses Rotes winery in Esporles with over 50 artists, as well as live music and food. It was a big event. This marked a shift for The Beehive, with less of a focus on pop up events and more on curated projects, done at a slower pace, such as the current cycle of exhibitions at Son Braho. The pair organized a holiday market in the Santa Catalina eatery that includes a variety of work such as paintings by Nahid Rupani, textiles from Stephanie Mensah, jewellery by Pepa Bonin, clothing by Cecilia Sorensen and Greeningline, ceramics by Piti Oleza and much more. This exhibition will remain on view through January.  “We are open to ideas, but pop ups are not needed as much any more on the island, so we are interested in doing projects like this one at Son Braho, where we can really be creative and make more of an impact,” says Kleener.

What distinguishes The Beehive from others is their generous spirit and genuine love of the community of artists on the island. On Instagram, they share events and exhibitions by artists, whether it is connected to their projects or not, because they want to support creatives. “We are realizing that the community is getting bigger. We are The Beehive, but we are starting to think about becoming The Beehive Balearics because we are getting artist submissions from Ibiza and Menorca.”

For the next edition at Son Braho, to open in early February, the pair say, “The concept of creativity is very wide in our book so we are open to whatever we find that is interesting, that connects us.” This might include scent, food, it could be a hairdresser or someone who does henna tattoos, all of which has featured in previous events. “It has to be fun,” says Kleener. “That is the main thing - it has to be fun. It has to be something that sparks our interest because this is all run on our love for art and creativity on the island.”
