T
hese are the final weeks to enjoy the 2026 edition of the Mallorca PhotoFest (PHOF), which officially ends on August 30th. Led by Art Palma Contemporani, under the direction of Xavier Fiol and with Xisco Bonín as part of the curatorial committee, PHOF opened in April with an in-depth program of exhibitions, talks, book signings that has been ongoing for four months. PHOF has been met with much success, with high attendance and positive feedback from visitors, artists and gallery spaces. While the festival ends on August 30th, there is time to see some engaging exhibitions at galleries and cultural centers. Here are a few of our recommendations.
Galeria Baro presents “Against Time,” a solo exhibition of Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (1955-2023). The exhibition takes place in the next door gallery space and is on view through September 4th. Olaf was known for his pioneering work addressing LGBTQ+ culture in the 1980s, but also for his meticulously lit and staged photographs that embraced references to Dutch Renaissance painting and other classical motifs, while being undeniably contemporary, provocative and surprising. “Against Time” presents a selection of small format photographs from Olaf’s Still Life series featuring flowers and plants in pots and planters set within nondescript interior settings. There is something mundane yet intriguing about each set up. A sense of calm and contemplation resonates from the images. As curator and critic Esmeralda Gomez Galera writes in the exhibition’s essay, “Suspended and seemingly still, these images foreground photography as a trace of something in the process of disappearing.”
