Jaume Vilardell has art in his DNA. He has always dedicated his life to what he is most passionate about: drawing. Born and raised in Palma, where he currently lives and runs his studio, Vilardell’s talent and professional career has made him a much sought after illustrator, working for top magazines and newspapers, as well as for private commissions and branding projects for numerous international firms, which he does in collaboration with his partner, Gabrielle, who is a consultant and project manager. In this interview for View Mallorca, Jaume shares his beginnings, his evolution, and the inspiration that the island of Mallorca brings to his work.

When did you discover your passion for illustration, and what has your journey been like from the beginning until now?
JV

As a child, I spent hours flipping through old illustrated books and magazines that we had at home. I would try to imitate the techniques I saw, using any paper or material I could find: pencils, pens, markers, and over time, nib pens, India ink, and quality paper. I studied industrial design in Palma and later received a scholarship to study furniture design in London. For a while, I worked in product design and branding, but the need to draw again led me to focus my work on illustration. A key moment was when some of my work was selected for the book 200 Best Illustrators by Lürzer’s Archive, which opened the door to major commissions from clients like Sony Pictures and Red Bull.

You live in Mallorca. How does the island inspire and influence your work?
JV

During my teenage years, in the 1980s, I was obsessed with getting away from Mallorca. However, in the early 1990s, after some time abroad, I had the opportunity to work at ForaVila, a pioneering studio in Sóller. That’s where I grew professionally and learned it was possible to work from the island for a global market, thanks to technology. Today, Mallorca represents my cultural roots, the place where our children have grown up, and where our family is. At the same time, the island has allowed us to develop international projects, blending the local with the global.

How would you describe your artistic style, and where would you like to take it in the future?
JV

I’m not sure I have a defined style. I like to adapt to the needs of each project, using various techniques—from pencil and watercolor to digital media, 3D, and artificial intelligence. That flexibility allows me to take on a wide range of projects. Lately, I’ve been venturing into animation, and seeing my illustrations come to life has been fascinating. It’s a path I’d like to explore further in the future.

What elements or situations inspire you daily, and what role does Mallorca play in that inspiration?
JV

What motivates me most is the challenge that each assignment brings. Every brief is different and always offers something new to learn, making the process very enriching. It’s hard for me to see clearly what role Mallorca plays in my work, because I’m inevitably part of it—its Mediterranean nature, its cultural traits, its rhythm, light, and colors surely leave a mark on my work. The illustrations I created for Bazaar Palma’s calendars, focused on Mallorca, reflect an intimate and evocative vision with a personal touch that recalls memories of a quieter, more authentic island, far from mass tourism.

What types of projects do you work on, and with which brands or companies have you collaborated?
JV

I mainly work in editorial illustration, packaging, advertising, branding, and product design. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with brands such as Sony Pictures, Bulgari, Bentley, Dior, Louis Vuitton, El País, Forbes, Mondadori, Phaidon, Rizzoli, Condé Nast, Hearst, and Die Zeit. I’ve also worked with agencies like TB-Atelier, Mandarina Brand Society, Signne, and Aducci, as well as local brands like Bazaar Palma, Durán, Freer Living, Nicolás Joyeros, Forum Shop, and Cap Rocat. I’ve illustrated fashion collections for haute couture magazines and taken part in branding and packaging projects for Codorníu and Damm. Recently, I illustrated the commemorative book for the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth, in collaboration with St. James’s Publishing House, and I also designed the visual identity for the Palma International Boat Show. In addition, we’ve just launched a very special branding project for Charles Marlow & Bros.

ASC
If you could fulfill one dream related to your artistic career, what would it be?
JV

I believe I’m already living that dream: being able to work every day on what I’m most passionate about, surrounded by people and projects that inspire me, from a place I consider home.
