Resmes: Honest and Functional Minimalism

Chiara Ferrari
Resmes is a furniture design studio founded by Elena García and Joan Morell; res mes in mallorquín means nothing more, declaring their philosophy: “each project aims to create objects where function and material are in charge of giving form, eliminating everything that is superfluous”. Their catalogue offers unique pieces, ranging from seating to lighting and accessories, made by the combination of artisanal and industrial techniques, celebrating the best of both worlds: the richness of heritage and contemporary innovation. Resmes works predominantly with oak wood, aluminium and stainless steel, materials that manifest their approach, process and aesthetic in design: bold, honest and functional minimalism. Elena and Juan met at university, at the Escuela superior de diseno de las islas baleares in Palma (EASDIB), while studying respectively interior design and product design; already back then they started discussing ideas about furniture collections while experimenting with materials. In 2023, while renovating their flat in Palma, they struggled to source furniture they liked and took the opportunity to actually start their own collection. Today, they hold workshops in the basement of a modernist property in Soller, where they assemble and finish pieces, and a studio in the neighbourhood of Son Oliva in Palma, which also functions as a showroom.

Would you define yourself as a design practice or more as a brand?
EG + JM

We could say that we have a bit of both worlds. We have our own line of furniture, in which we work with the client, manufacturing the product and final delivery/shipping, as well as enjoying commissions, which range from bespoke pieces to more ambitious projects, such as the design of different elements for the equipment of a gymnasium.

C.F.
In three words, what makes you different from other design studios/brands?
EG + JM

Proximity: We are committed to local production and a very personal relationship with each client. We approach each project with affection, taking care of the details, because our priority is that both the customer and ourselves are satisfied with the result.

Honesty: We do not hide anything about ourselves or our products where everything is in sight.

Simplicity: We want our products to be the minimum expression of themselves.

C.F.
Do you do production yourself or you outsource? Would you describe in detail what you do and what you outsource?
EG + JM

We take care of the assembly and final finishing of all the products, in the case of the chairs we order the structures from a craftsman ‘cadirer’ (chair maker) in Manacor, a town known for the manufacture of wooden furniture, and where nowadays there are less and less workshops due to the aggressive competition of low cost furniture coming from abroad. We are in charge of the chair bending, promoting a traditional technique that few people still know how to do, and in the case of the aluminium and stainless steel furniture we focus the production from the most modern techniques such as laser cutting and automatic bending. In this way we receive the pieces ready for us to assemble and finish them in our workshop.

"We would like to reach more people every year, but we would also like to develop efficient and accessible production on the island."

Where and how do you sell your furniture?
EG + JM

For now, directly through our website and through Instagram. We are open to growing and exploring new channels, as long as we keep our close and personalised way of working.

C.F.
Public projects where we can see your furniture..?
EG + JM

It can be seen in the three Santa Chiara restaurants in Palma; in the concept store of the Hotel Formentor; in the Dibella Studio training centre and… in our showroom at Carrer d'Iglesias Canyellas 9 bajos, Palma.

C.F.
Do you collaborate with other local creative studios?
EG + JM

Locally we have collaborated with isla Architects projects called As found. With Estudiinestable we collaborated on the design of the DB5 training centre. More recently, with Santos Studios on several restaurants in Palma, mentioned above. Also, we have been participating in events at 110 Mallorca, which has opened the doors to architects, designers, artists... to be able to come together and create an ‘artistic family’ that was needed in Mallorca.

C.F.
What is your goal, how do you want to grow in the future?
EG + JM

We would like to reach more people every year, but we would also like to grow efficient and accessible production on the island. In order to maintain or even grow the industrial fabric of the island, promoting endangered trades as well as more modern industry. In this way we would not have to depend solely on tourism.
