arc Nicolau is a designer and manager at Bulthaup Nicolau, a family-run business focused on the distribution of Bulthaup’s products and philosophy in Mallorca. The brand, founded by Martin Bulthaup in 1949 in Aich, Germany, offers high-end, industrially produced kitchen, cabinetry systems and accessories defined by functionality, durability and timeless design. Bulthaup partnered with the Nicolau family in 2000 because of their already established reputation on the island in custom-built kitchens. Their original store was opened in Pollensa in 2000, making this year their 25th anniversary celebration. The showroom is now rooted in central Palma, spreading across two floors in an historic building on La Rambla, hosting a wide selection of products and a busy team of designers, architects and installers.

Marc trained in design with a specialisation in kitchens’ spatial design and joined the family business fifteen years ago after finishing his studies. Today, the company is in a transitional phase as his parents, who started the company, have handed over the management to him and his sister Madga, while still being involved in major decisions. Bulthaup’s collaboration with designer Otl Aicher in early 1980s shaped the DNA of the company in forms and functions: he believed the kitchen should be an inviting place where meals are prepared together; where all the required tools and implements are clearly visible, and stored within easy reach. The “workbench” launched in 1988 is a great manifestation of this philosophy. The systems’ collection features modular components - from cabinet to accessories - allowing a high level of customisation in size and materials, mostly metals - steel and aluminum - woods and composite materials for the worktops; the exceptional quality of finishes and source materials stands for durability. The product range also includes handles, hinges and faucets: every detail is a result of ergonomic studies and industrially engineered parts, making the experience of cooking a seamless one in sound and touch.

ulthaup Nicolau operates across the island and gained its reputation in excellence by embracing the company’s values, yet for its ability of adapting industrially-produced systems to specific site conditions and needs, providing integrated solutions that embrace locality and speaks about expertise.  Marc explains that, “When it comes to customizing a Bulthaup kitchen in Mallorca, there can be many factors. I would say that each case is different because we try to adapt to the architecture of the project. This could mean, for example, changing some element of the kitchen, such as the countertop. One option could be to use a material other than the usual Bulthaup materials, such as steel, and instead use locally sourced natural stone.”

Each project is a result of a close collaboration between clients, the company’s production in Germany, local architects and construction companies. One of the hardest challenges in delivering projects is adapting to local site conditions, but also managing time: coordination between all the suppliers involved - such as appliances brands and interior finishes - is key, as kitchens are always last to be installed.

Bulthaup Nicolau also offers complements, from utensils to kitchenware and locally made artisanal plates, making its venue a one-stop shop for building and furnishing a kitchen. In the elegant Palma showroom Bulthaup’s products are also combined with exquisite furniture pieces from Vitra and Carl Hansen, reinforcing the values the company stands for: functionality, durability and timeless design.
